Preview: Korea Republic (South Korea) co-hosted the 2002 World Cup, and were the
Cinderella story of that tournament. Most observers doubt Korea's ability
to produce a similar showing this time around, especially after mixed results in
recent international play. Korea finished second to Saudi Arabia in
qualifying play, but beat both
United States
and
Mexico
in international play.
The most popular, if not the best Korean player is Manchester United
midfielder Park Ji-Sung. The tireless winger/midfielder exemplifies the
youth and fitness of the Korean side. Look for him and striker Lee
Dong-Gook to spark the team in the World Cup.
Result: Korea almost made the most of their chances in the 2006 World
Cup. They got the result they wanted against
France
and
Togo,
and finished just a point out of second place.
