In 2002 Senegal dazzled the world with a historic win over France, and reached the quarterfinals in their first ever World Cup.  Despite talented players, many of who play in premier European clubs, Senegal missed qualification for the 2006 World Cup, losing out to Togo.  The future of African football appears to be bright however, as newcomers Ivory Coast, Angola and Togo continue to carry the torch.
